HCMC – The government of HCMC’s District 1 on January 24 met with 38 households living in a condo building at 518 Vo Van Kiet Street to inform them of the worsening condition of Block E, which had begun to tilt and subside, and urged them to leave immediately, VietnamPlus news site reported.

The government assisted the residents in evacuating from the dangerous building in Cau Kho Ward, District 1, to makeshift homes built by the Compensation and Site Clearance Board of District 1.

Chau Phung Chi, Party Secretary of Cau Kho Ward, noted that 38 households with 153 residents living in Block E were in danger due to the degradation of the building.

To speed up the evacuation, the governments of District 1 and Cau Kho Ward dispatched emergency forces and means of transportation to the scene to assist the affected households. All households are expected to be evacuated today.

As the incident occurred just before the Tet holiday, the District 1 government gave 50 kilograms of rice to each household, while the agencies of Cau Kho Ward have proposed some level of support for the residents.

Chi stated that after the HCMC Department of Construction had reported its inspection and testing results, an appropriate solution would be reached to address the problem at Block E of the apartment building, such as repairing and rebuilding it.

A representative of the HCMC Department of Construction said that a unit under the department had earlier found the block was worsening and dangerous to residents and had written to the government of District 1 proposing various safety measures.
