HCMC – Hanoi City and national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines will jointly organize Dragon Boat Racing Festival 2019 at Ho Tay (West Lake) in the city from February 16 to February 17 (or the 12th and the 13th day of the first lunar month).

The festival, which is part of an agreement between the two parties on the cultural, sport and tourism development of the capital city, is meant to preserve the nation’s traditional sports. Accordingly, it is scheduled to take place annually to promote the municipal culture and history, as well as to attract more visitors to the city and create a playground for dragon boat racing enthusiasts.

This year festival will gather 30 competing teams from 25 delegations at home and abroad. Nearly 500 athletes will compete in 600-meter races in team of 12 people.

Aside from athletes in the north, many other athletes from multiple localities across the country will also participate in the races, such as HCMC, Danang, and Binh Thuan. The festival will also have the participation of the Embassy of Sweden and Swedish Alumni in Vietnam, the U.S. Alumni Association, and Vietnam Airlines.

During the two-day festival, the participating teams will be divided into one category of professionals and the other of amateurs.

The professionals consist of international teams coming from Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Hong Kong, and local teams. They will compete with each other at qualifying and final rounds, in team of 12 athletes for male and 12 athletes for female on February 16.

Meanwhile, the amateurs from units in the city will compete in team of 12 athletes for female and 12 athletes for male at the qualifying round on February 16 and the final on the following day.

As for amateurs from the embassy and agencies, they will take part in races with each team consisting of 12 both male and female athletes, with the qualifying stage taking place on February 16, and the final on the second day.

On the occasion of the festival, athletes of the boat racing and other water-based sports will go on a parade. Moreover, aside from watching competitions, local residents will enjoy the festive ambience of the new year through art performances.

The Dragon Boat Racing Festival 2019, starting from 9 a.m on February 16 to 4 p.m. on February 17, offers free admission.
