DANANG – The Danang International Airport in the central coastal region of Vietnam aims for more than 87,800 commercial flights and over 14.8 passengers this year.

The airport’s director, Le Xuan Tung, revealed the plan during a ceremony to welcome the passengers of the first flight to land at the airport during the first date of the 2019 Lunar New Year, or Tet holiday this morning.

There were 181 passengers on the flight which departed from the Incheon International Airport in the South Korean capital of Seoul.

Since February 2017, the local budget airline Vietjet has operated the direct flight service between Seoul and Danang on a daily basis, with a frequency of 14 flights per week.

According to the director, Danang airport is also expected to clinch a deal with the Chubu Centrair International Airport of Japan on February 20 in an attempt to promote regular direct flights between Danang and Nagoya, the largest city in the Chūbu region of Japan.

“The Danang International Airport will cooperate with the Danang Tourism Department and the Chubu Centrair International Airport to arrange seminars and familiarization (or FAM) trips, and shoot promotional movies in order to connect the two destinations,” Tung said.

He also expected local tour operators to offer competitive tour packages for Japanese tourists in Nagoya so as to provide further impetus for the development of tourism and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Last month, Danang saw an estimated 241,000 air passenger arrivals, a sharp rise of 44.7% from a year earlier.
