HCMC – Vietnam is looking to make US$2.4 billion in tra fish (pangasius) export revenue this year, according to the Directorate for Fisheries of Vietnam under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Tran Dinh Luan, deputy head of the directorate, was quoted by the Vietnam News Agency as saying that the target is achievable as all of Vietnam’s tra fish processing plants have met the stringent standards set by choosy markets such as Japan, the European Union and the United States.

The focus is on the deep processing and increase the production of items with high added value, he noted.

Nguyen Hoai Nam, vice general secretary of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, was also optimistic about the target.

Nam cited the assessments of experts as saying that the trade war between the United States and China has positive effects on a number of Vietnam’s export items. As a result, the export of tra fish is likely to rise thanks to the increasing demand of China caused by the U.S. trade barriers.

Further, when the European Union-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement is signed and brought into effect, the tax on this group of products would be reduced to zero from the current 5.5%-7% in the next three to seven years.

However, he also warned that there remain various obstacles to the export of tra fish, including import control programs in Europe and America. In case tra fish processors meet these programs, the competitiveness of Vietnamese tra fish will further improve.

Regarding the improved quality of tra fish products for export, Luan of the Directorate for Fisheries said his agency is joining hands with local seafood firms to develop the trademark for high-quality tra fish fillets, and find ways to supplement their content of nutrients.

To do so, the industry needs to increase investments in science and technology and make the full use of the materials available.

Tra fish exports brought US$2.26 billion in revenue last year, a 26.4% rise against 2017.
