HCMC - HCMC will strive to accelerate work on the Metro Line No. 1 project so as to complete 80% of the project this year and to put the line into operation by 2020 as planned, said Bui Xuan Cuong, head of the Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR) of HCMC.

To ensure the progress of the project, MAUR had proposed the HCMC government advance VND2.248 trillion (US$96.7 million) from the city’s budget to make overdue payments to the contractors, who resumed work on February 11, after the Tet holiday.

The city has so far advanced VND3.273 trillion for the project.

Cuong remarked that only 62% of the first metro line in the city, connecting Ben Thanh Market in District 1 and Suoi Tien Park in District 9, had been completed at the end of last year, lower than the target of 65%.

Metro Line No. 1, when in place, will pass through Districts 1, 2 and 9, as well as Binh Thanh and Thu Duc in HCMC and Di An Town of Binh Duong Province. The line will have 2.6 kilometers of underground tracks and over 17 kilometers of elevated tracks.

The total investment needed for the project has been adjusted upward from US$1.09 billion to US$2.49 billion.

Also according to Cuong, personnel problems were solved at the beginning of this year. Earlier, up to 55 employees of MAUR had resigned.

As the personnel crisis at MAUR has been addressed, some senior executives of MAUR no longer wish to quit their jobs, such as Duong Huu Hoa, chairman of MAUR’s labor union and director of the Project Management Unit No. 1 under MAUR, and Phan Nhat Linh, head of the planning and contract division of MAUR.
