HCMC - Pacific Foods on June 7 exported one ton of lychees to the EU, the first batch of Vietnamese lychees to be exported to the EU under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

The lychees, originating in Thanh Hai District, Hai Duong Province, will be on shelves in the EU in the next four or five days.

The shipment is being transported by plane and will arrive in Czech, which is home to one of the largest Vietnamese communities in the EU.

Following regulations of the EVFTA, which came into force on August 1, 2020, the shipment is exempted from import tariffs. This helps increase the competitiveness of Vietnamese lychees against products from Thailand, China and Malaysia.

According to Vu Ba Phu, chairman of the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, before the EU, Vietnamese lychees had been exported to Japan and Singapore.

Chung Tri Phong, general director of Pacific Foods, said it took three years for the company to negotiate with EU partners to ship lychees to the EU market. The company has collaborated with its partners to improve the processing system and ensure the quality of lychees meets EU standards.

Next week, the company will export another batch of lychees harvested in Luc Ngan District, Bac Giang Province, to the EU.

This year, Hai Duong has 9,000 hectares of lychees, including over 3,300 hectares in Thanh Ha District, with a total yield of 55,000 tons. Some 1,000 hectares meet VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards.

Bac Giang’s lychee production is estimated at 180,000 tons. The province is home to 15,200 hectares of lychees meeting VietGap standards and 82 hectares meeting GlobalGap standards.
